Mr. James Thomas Tart, Sr.



Mr. James Thomas Tart, Sr., 81, of Dunn died Saturday morning, April 22, 2017 at Highsmith-Rainey Specialty Hospital in Fayetteville. Thomas was born May 10, 1935 in Johnston County, son of the late James Alvin and Gladys Pearl Altman Tart. He was also preceded in death by sisters, Lois Pearl Pope, Edna Mae Johnson, Jackie Lou Sistrunck, Barbara Ann Murray; and brother, Jerry Ernest Tart.

Thomas had formerly owned and operated Tart’s Truck Stop and currently owned and operated Tart’s Auto Salvage and Tart’s Diner.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 25,2017 at Skinner & Smith Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Elvin Butts, Dr. Len Keever and Rev. Richard Murray officiating. Burial will follow at Hodges Chapel Church Cemetery.

Thomas is survived by his wife, Katherine Coats Tart; daughters, Patricia Tart Hinson and husband Marshall of Dunn, Tammy Tart Johnson and husband Gale of Nags Head, Jamie Brooke Tart of Dunn; sons, James Thomas Tart, Jr. and wife Audrey of Wade, Christopher Thomas Tart of Dunn, Justin Thomas Tart and fiancé Hannah of Dunn; step daughter, Jackie Lynn Gregory of Dunn; brothers, Billy Ray Tart and wife Hilda of Kenansville and Johnny Lee Tart of Clayton; brother-in-laws, Jimmy Pope, James Johnson, Richard Sistrunk and Richard Murray; grandchildren, Marshall Kevin Hinson and wife Jessica, James Dustin Hinson and wife Ashley, Jeremy Tart and wife Laura, Jordan Tart, Kaitlyn Tart, Brittani Taylor Johnson Jarmon and husband Brent, Trevor Norris Johnson, Erin Keir Johnson Bittler and husband Michael, Kayleigh Faith Tart; step grandchildren, Zaelynn Gregory, Kyson Gregory, Chandler Gregory; and eight great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Skinner & Smith Funeral home and at other times at the home.
